Your Eyes Deserve a Break: Understanding Digital Eye Strain

As we head into the sunny months of summer in Central Florida, it’s the perfect time to step back from screens and step into the light.

Yet for many of us, digital devices remain a constant companion—whether we’re working from home, binge-watching shows, checking social media, or helping kids with summer learning. Unfortunately, all this screen time can lead to a common condition known as digital eye strain (also called computer vision syndrome).

At the Filutowski Eye Institute, we’re committed to helping patients recognize, prevent, and relieve the symptoms of digital eye strain, especially during Florida’s bright and active summer months.

What Is Digital Eye Strain?

Digital eye strain refers to a group of eye and vision problems caused by prolonged screen use. When you stare at a screen for too long without proper breaks, your eyes become fatigued, much like your muscles would after holding a weight for hours.

Symptoms of digital eye strain include:

  • Blurred or double vision
  • Eye fatigue or discomfort
  • Dry, itchy, or watery eyes
  • Headaches or neck/shoulder pain
  • Difficulty focusing

The summer months can make symptoms worse, especially when transitioning between air-conditioned spaces and outdoor sunlight.

Why It Matters in Florida’s Summer Climate

Florida summers bring unique conditions for your eyes. Intense sunlight, glare from water and pavement, air conditioning, and increased digital downtime can all contribute to eye strain and discomfort.

Key Florida-specific factors include:

  • UV exposure: More sunlight means greater risk of glare and unprotected UV damage.
  • Dehydration: Hot weather increases fluid loss, contributing to dry eyes.
  • Cool indoor air: Air conditioning reduces humidity, drying out your eyes.
  • Summer screen use: More time at home may mean increased TV, tablet, and phone time.

Combining screen time with summer conditions can leave your eyes feeling dry, tired, and strained.

Tips to Prevent Digital Eye Strain

Here are the best strategies to prevent and relieve digital eye strain this summer:

1. Follow the 20-20-20 Rule

Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. This gives your eye muscles time to relax.

2. Adjust Your Screen Settings

  • Increase text size and contrast.
  • Lower screen brightness to match room lighting.
  • Use blue light filters or night mode.

3. Maintain Proper Posture

Ensure your screen is about an arm’s length away and positioned slightly below eye level. Sit upright to avoid neck and shoulder pain.

4. Blink More Often

We blink less when looking at screens. Make a conscious effort to blink often or use preservative-free artificial tears to reduce dryness.

5. Use UV-Protective Sunglasses

When transitioning outdoors, wear high-quality sunglasses with 100% UVA/UVB protection to reduce squinting and light sensitivity.

6. Stay Hydrated

Florida heat can sneak up on you. Drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep your eyes and body hydrated.

7. Take Screen Breaks

Enjoy screen-free summer activities like:

  • Walking outdoors in shaded areas
  • Reading a printed book
  • Swimming (with goggles!)
  • Gardening or outdoor yoga
