JOB SUMMARY: The primary function of the Insurance Verification Specialist is to contact carrier groups to obtain eligibility information ensuring that the most updated verification is entered into the practice management software. Develops and maintains effective relationships with the patients ensuring all patient demographic and insurance information is obtained.
REQUIRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
⦁ Responsible for effective and efficient verification of all patients’ benefits before their appointment.
⦁ Responsible for answering incoming calls from other providers, recipients, and carrier groups in relation to insurance coverage.
⦁ Research eligibility information online with various insurance carriers.
⦁ Responsible for acting as a liaison between patients, healthcare providers, and insurance carriers to ensure all proper measures are taken and information is collected.
⦁ Ensures all patient questions are answered and issues are resolved timely by utilizing the appropriate resources.
⦁ Responsible for obtaining all referrals and authorizations for procedures and services, as required.
⦁ Other duties as assigned by the Billing Manager.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND EXPERIENCE:

Essential Skills:

⦁ Perform basic manual and automated lensometry in order to record patient’s glasses
⦁ Copy refractions and/or meds onto prescriptions for the doctor’s signature
⦁ Answer questions regarding physician’s exam when directed to do so by the physician
⦁ Provide special referral/scheduling instructions to checkout when necessary (verbal orders given by physician)
⦁ Direct patient to next process: check-out, counseling, further testing, etc.
⦁ Write out lab orders, including appropriate diagnosis codes, on the prescription form and follow up on results
⦁ Accurately complete diagnosis / procedural codes in EMR
Basic Skills Development:
⦁ Measure and record visual acuity accurately
⦁ Instill eye drops properly (with direction from Doctor or Sr. Tech) and understand the indication/contraindication of use in dilation, corneal anesthetic, and other tests which may be required by the physician
⦁ Knowledge of medical terminology and commonly used abbreviations
Patient Services:
⦁ Assists physically and visually impaired patients properly
⦁ Escorts patients through the various stages of the examination process
Instrument / Exam Room Maintenance:
⦁ Stock examination rooms in assigned area
⦁ Maintain a supply of paperwork
⦁ Stock medication and med samples
⦁ Stock supplies
⦁ Notify Clinic Manager / Technician Supervisor when supplies run low
⦁ Clean and disinfect exam rooms and equipment

EMR
⦁ Able to navigate efficiently through the physician’s exam portion of templates, including plans and orders, Clinical Alerts, and Impression/Summary entries

Role Qualifications:
⦁ Must be JCAHPO COA, completed AAO Home Study course, or have equivalent knowledge, experience and skill level without certification
⦁ Must have proper documentation of manifest refractions for at least 6 months

Basic Skills:
⦁ Manual and automatic lensometry
⦁ Pupil exam: Size, Shape, Reaction, Response. Accurately determine presence of a Marcus-Gunn pupil
⦁ Confrontation visual field, detect defect and record
⦁ EOMs and cover test and record anomalies
⦁ Subjective manifest refraction and phoropter
⦁ Angle check with slit lamp
⦁ Function as a first and second half segmenting technician in patient examination
Patient Services:
⦁ Provide detailed explanation of most common surgeries, including pre- and post-op care. (Cataract, LASIK, pterygiectomy, SLT, YAG, LPI)
⦁ Provide basic explanation of minor procedures and less common surgeries (lid lesion excision, chalazion excision, laser trichiasis, vitreolysis)
⦁ Direct all patient questions regarding diagnoses, test results and treatment options to the doctor(s)
⦁ Have strong knowledge of commonly used diagnosis and procedure codes and where to find them on the route slip
⦁ Triage phone calls (EOVs)
EMR
⦁ Able to navigate comfortably through EMR templates and patient records in EMR
⦁ Able to import images using Document Manager

Exam Rooms/Instruments:
⦁ Provide necessary instruments and setup for minor procedures
⦁ Clean, wrap, and sterilize used instruments

Job summary: To meet and educate patients interested in vision correction per company policies and procedures, as well as facilitate any additional educational/service needs of the patient.
ADMINISTRATIVE:
⦁ Meet with and educate patients about vision procedures at FEI.
⦁ Follow up with patients who have not made a final decision as well as provide any additional needs of the patient.
⦁ Be ready to consult and/or contact patients at 8:00am unless other arrangements have been approved by management.

⦁ Responsible for the accurate collection and reporting of monies collected on a daily basis.
⦁ Must be able to answer patient questions relating to our practice, as well as perform financial transactions related to their surgery.
⦁ Must have basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office products and the ability to learn new programs quickly.
⦁ FEI travel and work hours assigned are two requirements of the position of Check-in and Check-out staff. Typical work hours are Monday through Friday from 8:00am to 5:00pm, but hours may range from 6:45am to 6:00pm. Check-in and Check-out staff must be flexible with hours and times assigned, as well as FEI locations not typically assigned in order to meet the company’s needs, with little to no advance notice (as much advance notice as possible will be attempted). Must be able to stay later than 6:00pm in the event the doctor assigned is running behind with patients and/or until the last patient checks out and leaves the building.
