As we age, the natural lens inside the eye gradually thickens and loses flexibility. This phenomenon, called presbyopia, is why many people begin needing reading glasses or bifocals later in life.  Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) corrects this presbyopia by replacing the eye’s natural lens with a clear artificial intraocular lens (IOL). In addition to improving near and distance vision, RLE eliminates the possibility of developing cataracts later in life and can also address early cataract changes that have already started to form.
